Horsham District Council are a local authority providing a range of public services for residents and businesses. With around 450 staff, we have a variety of jobs and career opportunities, from apprenticeships to management level.

As well as the corporate services such as Finance, HR and Legal, we also have a variety of specialist departments supporting the local and wider district. These include Planning and Building Control; Waste & Recycling services; Parking; Housing and homeless prevention; Parks and Countryside; Environmental Health and Licencing and the provision of a range of services in the community.

We have a friendly and supportive working environment, and being a smaller council you can really get to know everybody. We encourage and support our employees to have a healthy work life balance by supporting their professional development, offering 27 days’ annual leave (plus bank holidays) and flexible working options. We also offer a generous benefits package including eligibility for the Local Government contributory pension scheme, where the Council contributes 20% of pensionable salary.

All of this makes Horsham District Council a great place to work and we are always on the lookout for new people to join us.

Volunteering Opportunities – Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

Jeremy Knight – Our Museum Curator: “When I was growing up I did not want to be a train driver, footballer, or fireman – I wanted to be a Museum Curator – and I started my career by working for 4 years as a volunteer. I knew from my first day – cleaning teeth in Saxon skulls it was the right job".

Volunteering at the Museum: Many of our volunteers have joined us upon retiring, and some have been with us for over 25 years. But you don’t have to be at the start or end of your working life, you could, as a number of ours do, volunteer as a change from your everyday job. Volunteering at the Museum means you can enter a world different from the normal. It is not only interesting but gives you the chance to handle some amazing things, often other peoples' treasured possessions.

Current Volunteering Opportunities: Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has used the closure caused by COVID to refresh, re-display, tell new stories, as well as refocus our work. We are now looking for new volunteers for a variety of roles within the Museum & Art Gallery. These include:

1.Being the Face of the Museum: meet and greet the public when they arrive at the Museum. Promote the museum and sell items in the shop. This will involve working with a colleague for up to 4 hours in either the morning or afternoon.

2.Creating Online Collections: volunteers who have good computer skills and an eye for detail and curiosity who can help us put our collections online. Or perhaps you have other skills you can offer – apply and we will see what we have available. It may not be immediately, but opportunities do come up. Visit the Horsham Museum & Art Gallery website for more information and to contact us if you would like to volunteer!
