Sector skills: Marketing and communications

The sector champion for marketing and communications is local award-winning marketing agency PMW. Here they tell us more about what it's like to work in the sector.

PMW is an established and award-winning full-service marketing agency based in Billingshurst that provides clients with tangible results through creativity. The team is approximately 30-strong. Incorporating digital marketing, graphic design, social media, SEO, advertising, events, web design, video and public relations, we’re driven by a desire to deliver measurable, positive outcomes, and have the resources and the expertise to help businesses within all industries reach the next level.

Our team is diverse, cross-generational and gender balanced. Some of our staff have degrees; some studied at the University of Life. Some of our staff have spent their whole careers in marketing; others came from a different industry; for some it’s their first job; others have been through the ranks in various companies before they found us. To put it bluntly, there is no ‘typical PMW-er’.

The skills we look for when hiring depend on the role. Many of our roles are niche and technical, such as SEO experts or web developers. Others require more holistic experience, such as in our client services department. Some members of staff enjoy working as a team – others prefer independent working. Ultimately, we look for someone who can do the job to an extraordinary standard while supporting and living our ethics of creativity and originality. Qualifications are rarely as important as experience for us. While it’s a must for candidates to show they keep their skills up to date, we’re less about letters after names and more about tangible results. The proof’s in the pudding! Occasionally we hire paid interns and every year we offer local students work experience. For existing staff members, we regularly invest in training – both internal and external – to ensure our team’s skills remain fresh.

“I joined PMW around four and a half years ago as a social media intern straight out of university. I had studied marketing as a degree, but had no experience working on marketing projects in the real world. Since then, I’ve been promoted four times and I’m now a paid search manager. PMW gave me the opportunity to put everything I had learned into practice on countless projects ranging from large animal charities to builder’s merchants, restaurants through to countryside events and everything in-between. I may have learned a lot at university, but I’ve gained just as much working for PMW.” Ben Luff, Paid Search Manager

“I’ve been working at PMW Communications for over four years now.  It is true to say that we have all the skills of a London agency but are lucky enough to have beautiful offices in the Sussex Countryside as well enjoy a great team culture.  I really enjoy the diversity of our clients and building great relationships with them.  Since I have joined, our digital team has really grown and this has given me the opportunity to improve my knowledge and skill in the online marketing arena.” Jackie Stainer, Senior Account Manager

“Now in my 15th year at PMW and I can still say to this day that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I first came to PMW during my University summer holiday to gain some experience before completing my final year and really haven’t looked back since. On completing my degree I was offered the opportunity to return to PMW and over the years I worked my way up starting as PR executive and then finding my true passion as an Account Manager and subsequently, Account Director. Over the years PMW has taught me never to give up and that even though on the surface something seems impossible, there is always a way. I have also learnt to never get complacent with the marketing work we do for our clients and to ensure that we are always offering the best service as, let’s face it marketing is constantly changing so we need to adapt to those changes.  I think though one of the best things of working at PMW, and this may sound very clich√©, is that we really do work together and support each other like a family.” Suzie Farrell, Account Director
